90 Years and Counting: Time to Celebrate

Uncategorized Oct 12, 2016

2016 has been a year of celebrations for Hundred Acre, and October is no exception. To coincide with a very special day in our world, we’re marking the occasion with a trip to an amazing place that has brought happiness to millions of people across the world.

On 14th October 1926, A.A. Milne’s much-loved bear, Winnie the Pooh, was introduced to the world as his first adventure was published. It’s no secret that our company name derives from Winnie the Pooh, as founder and director, Bridget Gilmour, openly admits in a recent podcast.

“I wanted to find a company name that I liked,” explains Bridget. “Hundred Acre is very personal to me as it’s where Piglet lives, and Piglet was my nickname growing up. Once I realised that my safe place could become everyone else’s safe place, I knew what I needed to call my company.”

To celebrate 90 years of Winnie the Pooh and the place he and his friends call home, we’re visiting Ashdown Forest, the real Hundred Acre Wood, this weekend. We’ll be posting about our adventures in the future, but for now, let’s hope the British weather holds out!

Four new adventures for Winnie the Pooh and friends were released last week, along with a new character, Penguin. Disney also released an animation earlier this year to celebrate the 90thbirthdays of both Her Majesty The Queen and Winnie the Pooh, which you can watch on YouTube here: Winnie the Pooh and the Royal Birthday. Please let us know what you think of these new stories and animations as we think they’re wonderful.

One of the reasons A.A. Milne’s books are so popular still today is because we can all take inspiration from the stories and the characters, which we’ll be exploring in future posts. If you haven’t yet read our most popular blog post, What can Winnie the Pooh teach us about Health and Safety?, please take a moment to read it now as it really will make you think twice about how your colleagues and clients behave.

As we celebrate 90 years of Winnie the Pooh and our namesake this weekend, we hope you enjoy the four new adventures Pooh and friends, while introducing our favourite characters to the next generation.

Enjoy your weekend, and please do get in touch if you’d like to know more about the services we provide here in our Hundred Acre. You can call us on +44 (0)1933 201103 or enquire via our contact page.

The photo on this page was taken using Bridget’s own possessions. They are the original copies of the books she was given as a child that sit on a shelf in her study next to the copies of the books that her mother was given as a child. Her mother’s copies are annotated with her perfectly written name, address and Christmas 1945, and she’s even coloured in the pictures throughout the books. The poster was on Bridget’s wall as a student and the teddies are two of many she has in her home. Piglet has accompanied Bridget around the world, giving her both comfort and strength on occasions.
