We often hear the word “values” being bandied around in business these days, so this World Values Day, we thought we’d explain why they matter to us and how we live by them in our Hundred Acre world.
As the World Values Day website explains:
“Values are the things that are important to us. [. . .] They are deeply held principles that guide our choices and behaviours and influence our emotions. Values are the core of who we are. They are our motivators, our drivers, the passion in our hearts and the reason why we do the things we do.”
By understanding and then assigning values to a business, you give the company an identity and employees a guide of social conduct to work to. To truly embed values in business practices, all staff members, supply chains and sub-contractors need to create habits and behaviours that bring the values to life. The same principles as to embed safety into a company too.
Some companies have mission statements or company visions that match their values or beliefs, while others, like IOSH, have a code of conduct for members to follow and live up to. Whatever your company is guided by, you might find Simon Sinek’s great YouTube videos and his Start With Why book helpful.
“When everyone in a business has matching values, everything works better.” Explains Bridget Gilmour, Hundred Acre’s founder and director. “We live by our core values so we can provide the best service for our clients.
“The values mentioned in our word cloud are incredibly important to me and include my core values and I love living my life and running my business by them. They mean a lot to all of us here in our Hundred Acre world, and since understanding these values, life has definitely been a lot smoother.
“There have been times when something has fought against our values, but more often than not, we work with businesses who are in synergy with us. We’ve learnt that everything is far calmer and works better when we are aligned with other people and businesses.”
We hope our clients understand the benefits embedding values in their businesses can bring, and that this has encouraged you to explore the subject a little more too.
Though the word has many different definitions, we think they all come back to just a couple of words: worth and importance. What do you think? We’d love to hear your views and find out what values you live by.
If you’d like to find out more about our core values and how they help us benefit your business, please don’t hesitate to call us today on +44 (0)1933 201103 or write to us via our contact page. We look forward to hearing from you.
